Conclusion of 2018 Weekly Activities

Weekly activities play a vital role in the lives of all society members. These activities do not only liven up the atmosphere during most lessons, but also ensure all members will leave the classroom expecting more exciting activities during the next lesson. The weekly activities of our society aim to warm up the class before the actual lesson begins so that members will be able to provide a more lively performance. Our society hopes to improve members’ relationship while developing a more relaxed surrounding for members to take a break from the hectic lessons in their host classes by carrying out these weekly activities. Our activities are usually used to improve vocabulary, practise conversing, learn tenses – the list goes on and on. Thus, our society has held 42 weekly activities in total, 23 times on Wednesdays and 19 times on Saturdays.

Learning Opportunities

As the members of English Language Society, the knowledge gained from the weekly activities is endless. From the basic grammar of the English language to the secondary skills that can only be instilled through specific activities, members have gained plenty of exclusive knowledge and skills throughout the course of the year. Without further ado, let us cut straight to the chase.

The basic knowledge gained from our ordinary lessons includes the general knowledge of the topic of the day as well as some tips on improving members’ communicating skills and vocabulary.  In the time being, members may improve their reading and listening skills if they had paid enough attention during the lessons. During our lessons, members’ critical thinking skills may also be improved by taking part of the quizzes. Besides that, our activity planners have also provided lessons that revise the basics of grammar usage and some vocabulary practices before the examinations. Members will understand more about the rules of the language by taking part in this lesson.

Furthermore, the latter activities are the alternative ways to develop members’ secondary skills which are not learnt from the study of books. These secondary skills such as teamwork, communicating skills, confidence and trust are learnt by being proactive in the activities. Members can also experience working under pressure, which gives them a chance to experience a simulation of the real society outside the walls of our school. Their flexibility and efficiency can also be improved by coping with the ever changing rules of regulations of the games. These skills are extremely difficult to master, but these activities proved that greatness comes from great commitment. From a different perspective, the friendship and relationship among the members have also shown a significant improvement throughout the year.

During the activities, members have shown their utmost cooperation with the committee members. When PowerPoint presentations are held, members have paid attention during the lessons by giving their responses whenever required. They are also very competitive during the quizzes after the presentations. They have tried their best to win the opponent team so that they would not need to be punished and will be able to receive a small prize at the end of the day. It is very satisfying to see members to be happy throughout the lessons and are having a good time compared to being forced to listen to boring classes during school time. Besides, during the games, members have tried their level best to compete with other teams because they like the feeling of success. They hardly ever feel down during the activities. In their perspectives, these activities are the ones that cheer them up, not let them down.

In a nutshell, the weekly activities have provided a series of learning opportunities which have contributed a lot in ensuring a smooth journey to their futures. Members have been quite satisfied with the activities arranged by the activity planners, despite the occasional boring topics and awkward moments. It can be seen that members have appreciated the games the most, followed by the PowerPoint presentations and debating lessons. Thus, it is obvious to see that the members prefer having more physical activities during the lessons rather than sitting at their places and listen to some other member talk for an hour.
